A close friend of mine, a water fitness instructor, swears by the Hydro-tone bells and boots. Besides using them to train both fit and injured clients, she uses them personally to boost her cardiovascular performance. Although over 40, she consistently wins road races, usually outpacing the next woman and all but a couple of the fastest men by a substantial margin. She does this WITHOUT running training on land! She trains by “running” in the water with Hydro-tone, along with some stationary cycling and elliptical cross-training. Despite her testimonial, I borrowed her Hydro-tone a few times before buying my own, due to the significant cost. I was convinced. They are well worth what you pay for them. I can attest that, in addition to the cardiovascular benefits, Hydro-tone provides a rigorous full body workout, toning and strengthening core, upper body and lower body muscles. Back and knee problems that constrain my land workouts are not an issue with Hydro-tone. The boots can be a little difficult to put on, and can be uncomfortable if you don’t get them on straight. I wear socks under them to help eliminate any pinching or rubbing. The boots also tend to catch on each other as you alternate your legs front and back/in and out and you must be careful not to damage them this way, but with practice you will learn how to avoid the catching. Although the bells float, you do not have to force them down below the water surface as with foam-based water dumbells. This is much easier on the shoulder joints. Finally, because my pool is not very deep, I really appreciate that Hydro-tone does not require deep water and a flotation belt.
