This August, we’re proud to announce AquaGear’s 25th year of business. Since 1992, we’ve been serving water enthusiasts of all kinds, from aqua aerobics-goers and therapists to snorkelers, lifeguards, and competitive swimmers.
AquaGear’s founder, Joanne Bullock, attended her first AEA (Aquatic Exercise Association) conference in Alexandria, VA in the early 1990′s. She immediately recognized a need to make aquatic exercise gear more accessible to consumers. Although this type of specialty equipment could be purchased at aquatic events, sporting goods stores hadn’t yet caught on to the growing water exercise trend, making aquatic therapy and water workout gear a hard-to-find commodity.
Joanne began stocking just 3 items: Sammy towels, Swim Mate Solution, and Hydro-Fit Wave Web Gloves. AquaGear’s first ads appeared in Swimming World Magazine in 1992. Then a mail-order company, the only way to place an order was by paper order form, sent along with check or cash.
The value of the company crystallized when it became the Internet’s first swim shop in 1994 and, what began as a tiny one-woman operation, soon erupted onto the water exercise scene. Since then, AquaGear has worked to build lasting relationships with customers as well as quality manufacturers like Speedo, Aqua Sphere, and TYR. Our primary focus has always been to maintain a positive relationship with the swimming community by donating products to local swim teams, rehab centers, and schools and to provide every customer with the attention they deserve.
Even after all these years, we’re still committed to providing a customer service experience that’s convenient, helpful, and personal. That means being available by phone (and email) to help you select the right flotation belt or goggles, measure fins to ensure the right fit, or track down an item that you just can’t find anywhere else.
We’d like to extend our gratitude to our customers, without whom this endeavour would never have been possible. We’re also indebted to our fantastic employees who grew up alongside AquaGear and became both invaluable employees and close friends.
